BLACKPINK Rewrites K-pop History as Coachella Headliner

On the 15th and 22nd, BLACKPINK successfully completed their performances at the ‘Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival,’ North America’s largest music festival held in California, USA. They captivated the audience for about 85 minutes without a break, from their hit song parade that broke language barriers and brought the crowd to sing along, to their distinctive solo performances of JENNIE, LISA, JISOO, and ROSÉ.
This year’s ‘Coachella’ was the first attempt without a white headliner, drawing attention. BLACKPINK was selected as the first K-pop artist to be a headliner, rewriting world music history. Variety said, “This year’s ‘Coachella’ clearly shows the direction the music festival is going.”
Significant achievements followed this monumental moment. After the first day of the festival, Rolling Stone reported, “BLACKPINK’s stage was the most streamed performance at ‘Coachella'” and “it is estimated that a whopping 250 million people (based on UK IT media TechRadar’s count) watched live on YouTube.”
BLACKPINK captivated global music fans with their unique Korean beauty on stage. They received praise for their powerful presence with a traditional hanok set in the center of the stage, hanbok costumes embroidered with mother-of-pearl, the “Typa Girl” performance using a fan dance, and JISOO’s solo stage with a reinterpretation of traditional Korean window patterns on the back screen.
Foreign media also focused on BLACKPINK’s activities. Billboard praised, “It was a historic and memorable set. They showed what they could do best as a team, and the four members shined with their own personalities.” The Guardian commented, “BLACKPINK’s stage was evidence that the language and cultural barriers of pop music are gradually being dismantled.”
There was praise for the highly polished stage direction, which was the result of the dedication of top domestic and international staff. The LA Times stated, “It was the largest scale and most intense performance since Beyoncé made history in 2018.” Variety evaluated, “Conquering the biggest stage at the biggest festival in the United States is by no means a small feat.” CNN also highlighted the Korean elements in BLACKPINK’s stage, saying they “represented Korean culture and symbolically embraced the past and future.”
