‘Enormous Influence” US Media Spotlights BLACKPINK’s Upcoming Performance at ‘Coachella’ for the First Time as K-Pop Idols

[헤럴드POP=천윤혜기자] Global media channels are spotlighting BLACKPINK after the group was confirmed to perform at ‘Coachella’, the largest music festival in the US.

On January 3(local time), Billboard wrote an article that analyzed the fans’ reactions after this year’s Coachella lineup was announced and wrote, “After Coachella announced its 2019 festival lineup on the 2nd, the fans are reacting with heat on the news that BLACKPINK, the K-Pop quartet will perform at Coachella this year”. They added, “The fans are expressing their excitements and expectations through their social media after Coachella’s announcement”. 

In addition, Billboard spotlighted BLACKPINK with a special article titled ‘Five Takeaways From the 2019 Coachella Lineup’. Billboard chose ‘globalization’ as the major trend of the Pop scene for the past couple of years and explained, “The influence of K-Pop and Latin Trap are getting deeper in the US Pop industry”. They added, “This influence has been proven through BLACKPINK, the K-Pop artists who got listed on this year’s Coachella lineup poster”.

‘Time’, the American weekly news magazine, focused on BLACKPINK’s upcoming performance by uploading an article titled, ‘BLACKPINK is Set to Become the First Female K-Pop Act to Perform at Coachella”. They explained, “The four-member group was included on the 2019 Coachella Music Festival lineup along with headliners including Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino, and Tame Impala”. 

Time magazine also wrote, “This year’s Coachella Music Festival will be BLACKPINK’s official debut in the US” and explained, “BLACKPINK’s MV for ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ is the fastest MV to reach 500 million views in K-Pop’, spotlighting the group’s global popularity.

Furthermore, they evaluated BLACKPINK’s high potential to become global artists by adding, “They entered Billboard’s HOT 100 chart with ‘Kiss and Make Up’, the collaborative song with Dua Lipa released on October, becoming the only K-Pop girl group to enter the HOT 100 charts”.

Pitchfork also spotlighted BLACKPINK along with global stars including ‘Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, Ariana Grande, and Bad Bunny’ through their special article titled ‘6 Takeaways from the 2019 Coachella Lineup’. Pitchfork focused on BLACKPINK’s global influence by writing, “BLACKPINK is set to become the first K-Pop girl group to perform at Coachella this year”.

The Rolling Stone has also previously published a special article with the title, ‘BLACKPINK: 5 Things to Know About the K-Pop Girl Group’, notifying BLACKPINK’s debut in the US.

The Rolling Stone wrote, “BLACKPINK will become the first K-Pop idols to perform at ‘Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival’. As they were revealed on the second line of the lineup poster along with artists including Janelle Monáe, Diplo, the 1975, their presence in the US is currently strong”. They added, “While only Asian regions have been announced as the concert locations for BLACKPINK’s first-ever world tour, the fans are curious whether BLACKPINK will also hold a North America tour”.

While receiving the spotlight from global media, BLACKPINK has partnered with Interscope Records, the representative label of Universal Music Group, and announced their expansion in to the US market last year. 

After announcing a ‘legendary promotion’ including the upcoming performance at Coachella, BLACKPINK will also start their first-ever world tour in Bangkok on January 11th to meet their global fans. 

The people are paying keen attention on how high BLACKPINK will rise after being acknowledged by the global market.
