BLACKPINK’s 2nd full album ‘BORN PINK’, which was released on the 16th, portrayed BLACKPINK’s confidence in taking over the world, going beyond being a representative K-POP star.
Regarding ‘Shut Down’, YG had previous said “It’s a song that will open up a new horizon for BLACKPINK’s music, by intersecting classic and hip-hop genres. Their sampling of Paganini’s ‘La Campanella’ and trendy hip-hop beats create an exquisite harmony, and the sharp violin sounds and heavy beat put together will provide listeners with a new thrill”.
In particular, the lyrics to ‘Shut Down’ stand out. BLACKPINK says “It’s not a comeback since we’ve lever left, Heads turn, careful, you might break your neck” and “It’s not a game since we’ve never lost, Bark, because the leash on your neck is mine”. The reason why lyrics such as “Pull down the shutter lock the door, shut down” don’t sound arrogant is because BLACKPINK has in fact reached to the top as world’s best girl-group, enjoying world-wide popularity.
BLACKPINK’s step-up in reputation could be seen through their performance at the 2022 MTV VMAs with their pre-release song ‘Pink Venom’. Not only did they perform on the stage, but they also took home 2 trophies including an individual win.
