BLACKPINK JENNIE Becomes ‘Best’ Korean Solo Artist on Spotify… Surpasses ‘Gangnam Style’
[스포티비뉴스=김원겸 기자] BLACKPINK became the best Korean solo artist on Spotify, the world’s biggest music streaming platform.
According to YG Entertainment on October 16, JENNIE’s ‘SOLO’ has surpassed 204.08M streams on Spotify. It is the greatest number of streams among all songs released by Korean solo artists. PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style’, which was globally popular, currently has 204.06 streams.
JENNIE has previously become the first Korean female solo artist to surpass 200M streams on Spotify, back in April. She is now the no. 1 among all Korean solo artists, proving her tremendous rise in popularity.
JENNIE released ‘SOLO’ back in November 2018 as part of BLACKPINK’s solo project. The beautiful chords in the intro, the simple melody line, and the direct and honest lyrics which state one’s confidence even after a breakup received positive reviews.
JENNIE’s global influence as a solo artist was huge. ‘SOLO’ has dominated the real-time·daily·weekly charts in major Korean music platforms. The song also topped iTunes charts in 40 different regions of the world, became the first-ever song by a Korean female solo artist to top the iTunes Worldwide Song chart, and entered the US iTunes Top 10.
The MV for ‘SOLO’ has also set the ‘fastest’ records in Korean female solo artist history. The MV surpassed 100M views in 23 days since its release and will soon reach 550M views.
Meanwhile, BLACKPINK, the group JENNIE is part of, is dominating multiple global charts with ‘THE ALBUM’, their official debut album released 4 years after the group has made debut.
‘THE ALBUM’ was ranked at no. 2 on the Billboard 200 and UK’s Official Albums Chart, proving their presence in the major Pop market. Furthermore, BLACKPINK was ranked at no. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 Chart, as well as becoming the first K-Pop girl group to chart 2 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.
