[스타뉴스=이정호 기자] Before group BLACKPINK, Netflix Original Documentaries were produced for only 3 female artists, including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift. They are Pop stars who are globally famous.

According to YG Entertainment on September 9, BLACKPINK became the fourth female artist to have a Netflix Original Documentary produced for them in the world. The filming for the documentary, ‘BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky’ has been completed, and the documentary will premiere on October 14th, exclusively on Netflix.

There has been the ‘Explain’ series covering the K-Pop wave and its success factors previously, but it is the first time that a Netflix Original Documentary is exclusively spotlighting a single artist of Korea.

When the news came out, not only the global fans, but also foreign media also paid attention. Jeff Benjamin, the American music columnist, pointed out the meaning of BLACKPINK’s documentary through a Forbes article.

He explained, “Netflix has previously launched Korean TV shows and dramas, but it’s another realm for them to create a documentary focusing on one artist, such as Lady Gaga’s ‘Five Foot Two’ or Taylor Swift’s ‘Miss America’”.

He also added, “Netflix has made a huge step by creating an original series with a K-Pop artist”, and reviewed BLACKPINK’s documentary as ‘taking a leap’.

The background to producing the documentary ‘BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky’, which led a change in Netflix, was supported by BLACKPINK’s global popularity and new record stream.

Jeff Benjamin stated, “BLACKPINK’s ‘Kill This Love’ MV surpassed 1B YouTube views in a year and a half since its release” and continued, “BLACKPINK has enough streams to become global stars who are loved on Netflix”.

Furthermore, he also added, “Since BLACKPINK’s first official debut album will be released on October, the launch timing of this documentary is perfect, even for Netflix”.
