[Exclusive] Why was WINNER rejected by a famous American music video director?
[일간스포츠=이미현 기자] WINNER’s behind story of being rejected by famous American music video director Dave Meyers while preparing for their upcoming new album has been unveiled.
On April 4, an YG insider revealed a behind story of WINNER, saying, “We requested the directing of the music video of ‘REALLY REALLY’, one of the double title tracks of WINNER’s new album, to Dave Meyers under YANG HYUN SUK’s instructions. Meyers rejected the offer so we were confounded”.
Rejecting the offer, Dave Meyers left a short comment “I’ve never directed a music video of an ‘idol group’ so far, so I’m not confident in doing it”.
After YANG HYUN SUK heard the news that Meyers rejected the offer, he did not give up and emphasized once again that WINNER’s new music video must be directed by him no matter what, as YANG has been a long-time fan of Meyers. Then, YANG HYUN SUK told to Dave Meyers through CL who has personal connections with Meyers that WINNER was not just one of those ordinary idol groups but a group of musicians who write their own songs. YANG asked Meyers to just listen to WINNER’s new song “REALLY REALLY”, even if he rejects the offer once again afterwards.
Eventually, Meyers listened to “REALLY REALLY” and sent a message to YG, “It was not like a song of an idol group that I had thought it would be. Even though the schedule is tight, I really wanna work with them”.
Finally, the agreement was made between Meyers and YG. WINNER flew off to the United States right away, to shoot the video with Meyers. At first, WINNER had many concerns as it was the first time for them to shoot a music video with a famous foreign director. However, the shooting was carried out nicely in a friendly atmosphere, while WINNER mingled well with not only the director but also dozens of foreign dancers like close friends.
CL who is preparing for her official debut in the States visited the music video shooting to support WINNER. According to insiders, CL personally asked Meyers to take special care of WINNER’s music video.
Dave Meyers is a music video director who has worked on more than 200 music videos of world-famous pop artists including Rihanna, Lil Wayne, Katy Perry, Pink, Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, etc. Meyers received “MTV Video Music Award Best Video of the Year” for Pink’s “So What” in 2009 and “Grammy Award Best Music Video” for Missy Elliot’s “Lose Control” in 2005. CL is the only Korean artist who worked with Dave Meyers; Meyers directed the music video of CL’s “LIFTED”. Meyers’ latest work “Humble” of Kendrick Lamar released in 2017 is enjoying great popularity recently.
WINNER is coming back on April 4 at 4PM with “REALLY REALLY” and “FOOL”, the double title tracks, after one year and two months of absence from the music scene. Before the official comeback, WINNER will celebrate their comeback with fans at 3PM on VLIVE. Then, WINNER will kick off performances for their new songs in earnest.
