[Music Talk Talk] Will YG’s Bet on iKON Succeed?
[OSEN=김경주 기자] YG Entertainment has made a bet by delaying the release date of iKON’s new album. iKON is to release their new digital singles “APOLOGY” and “ANTHEM” at midnight on November 16.
Originally, iKON was to release their album on November 1. However, YG CEO YANG HYUN SUK made an announcement that they will be delaying the release of iKON’s album a week before the promised date. Since this was such a big change of plans, it created quite a sensation.
This brought about complaints and dissatisfaction among the fans. Adding to this, the fans of WINNER were also not happy because WINNER has not released a song for a whole year even though they won a number of rookie of the year awards last year. So, it is not too much to say that YG’s fans were extremely unhappy with YG.
Although BIGBANG made a record-breaking success with their MADE album from May to August, the fans of younger YG artists were left to wait for the release of new singles.
Why did iKON, a team that has taken the charts by storm with their debut single “MY TYPE”, put off the release of their album even though they knew the fans would not be very happy about it? iKON knew that they would receive much more criticism and resentment if the results did not match up to the fans’ expectations.
However, YG was confident. YG Entertainment’s CEO YANG HYUN SUK ordered YG’s top producers TEDDY AND KUSH, who made many hit songs for BIGBANG and 2NE1, to help iKON make their new album. He changed iKON’s stylists and hired renowned MV directors Suh Hyun Seung and Han Sa Min, the directors of BIGBANG’s MVs, to make iKON’s MVs. YANG HYUN SUK is looking into every detail of iKON’s new album himself.
Thanks to YG’s big change of plans, expectations are running high for iKON’s comeback. Will they be able to come up with a mega hit song that will surpass their debut single “MY TYPE”?
“APOLOGY” is a slow R&B song about the pain and sorrow of an unwanted breakup and “ANTHEM” is a powerful hiphop song performed by the rappers of iKON – B.I and BOBBY. iKON is set to charm the fans with their two contrasting digital singles.
