[Music Talk Talk]Music from TV Shows Dominating the Charts, but YG’s is Still Keeping its Place
[OSEN=정준화 기자] Music from variety shows is dominating the charts. Musicians are complaining that they are losing their foothold on the charts. However, there are some musicians that have secured their positions: BIGBANG, SONG MIN HO, TABLO, JINUSEAN, HYUK OH, IU and Zion.T. Except from IU and Zion.T, they are all YG musicians.
Of course, music from TV shows is wielding great influence on the charts. However, YG’s unique style of music, which is based on hip hop yet maintaining the appeal to the masses, is the secret to its success on the charts. YG has added elements to hip hop making their music easier and more likeable to the general public.
If you look at the top ten songs on Melon charts as of 11 AM on September 5, six are by YG artists.
Park Myeong-su & IU’s “Leon” is No.1 on the charts. Following closely behind, there is “MAPSOSA” by GD & TAEYANG& Kwanghee ranking second and SONG MIN HO’s “FEAR” ranking third. HYUK OH & Jeong Hyeong-don’s “Wonderful Barn” ranks fifth, and Incredivle, Tablo, and Jinusean’s “Oppa’s Car” ranks seventh. “Geobukseon” and “Okey Dokey”, both of which features SONG MIN HO, ranks 9th and 10th on the charts, respectively.
These are the rankings for the charts of Melon, the biggest music streaming site in Korea, and other music charts look pretty much the same. Out of the top ten songs, 60% are songs by YG artists. The situation is same when you look at the top 20 songs. BIGBANG’s “LET’S NOT FALL IN LOVE”, “ZUTTER”, “BANG BANG BANG”; TABLO’s “HOOD”; and HYUKOH’s “WI ING WI ING” and “COMES AND GOES” are all in the top 20 charts.
Music from variety shows is rocking the charts, but YG still has a strong foothold. Most of the songs that are rocking the charts are the results of fantastic collaboration and synergy between YG and variety shows such as “Infinite Challenge” and “Show Me The Money 4”.
No matter how popular a TV show is, the music from that TV show cannot win the love of the fans if it is not good and are not made by talented musicians. Therefore, it can be said that good music made by talented musicians coupled with the popularity of TV shows lead to the current trend of TV show music dominating the charts.
