[뉴스1=황미현,안태현 기자] Seven years after BLACKPINK, YG Entertainment has unveiled its new girl group, BABYMONSTER. Armed with the potent YG DNA, the group has demonstrated significant global influence and talent within just over two months of their official debut.

BABYMONSTER naturally received the global spotlight as the direct successor to top girl group BLACKPINK. With the addition of member AHYEON on April 1st, they have marked impressive achievements both domestically and internationally, two months into their official debut.

While the title of ‘Sister Group to BLACKPINK’ could have been daunting, BABYMONSTER has shown that they are deserving of the title through their skills.

Their debut with “BABYMONSTER 1st MINI ALBUM” recorded a first-day sales figure of 401,287, setting a new record for the highest first-day sales for a K-pop girl group debut album. By May 24th, they had reached over 520,000 cumulative sales, achieving the status of a half-million seller with their official debut album.

Their popularity is not just confined to Korea. The title track “SHEESH” from their mini-album was featured in Billboard’s “Songs to Watch,” receiving favorable reviews. On April 7th, the music video for “SHEESH” topped YouTube’s Global Weekly Music Video Chart for the week of March 29th to April 4th, 2024, garnering significant global attention. The music video surpassed 200 million views on YouTube just 33 days after its release.

Furthermore, “SHEESH” exceeded 100 million streams on Spotify on May 28th, just about two months after the album’s release on April 1st. This achievement came three months quicker than their pre-debut track “BATTER UP,” which took five months to reach the same milestone. “SHEESH” also successfully charted on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global and Weekly Top Songs Global charts for 56 days and seven weeks consecutively.

The response in Japan has been remarkable. Upon its release, the mini-album immediately topped iTunes Japan K-Pop and K-Pop Album charts and placed highly on Oricon’s Weekly Album, Pop (Import), and Comprehensive Album charts as well as Billboard Japan’s Hot Album and Download Album charts.

Especially notable, before their official debut in Japan, BABYMONSTER appeared on TV Asahi’s ‘Music Station’ and subsequently on major terrestrial music programs in Japan such as NHK, TBS, and Nihon TV, proving their popularity.

Empowered by this success, BABYMONSTER is currently conducting their first fan meeting tour across five Asian cities with seven sessions and has announced their participation in Japan’s largest music festival, ‘Summer Sonic 2024,’ this August, raising expectations for their continued global activities.

The talents of BABYMONSTER have been a significant factor in their success. An industry insider mentioned, “K-pop groups are increasingly making it to the lineups of major international festivals, and these stages highlight their performance and live capabilities. In this context, BABYMONSTER is considered a group with high potential.”

BABYMONSTER has also been gathering attention for their live performances. Recently, their strong vocal and rap skills showcased in the exclusive performance video of “LIKE THAT” received high praise. Despite the conclusion of domestic music broadcasts, they are scheduled to perform “LIKE THAT” on Mnet’s ‘M Countdown’ this month.

During their initial press conference at the time of their official debut, BABYMONSTER mentioned advice received from BLACKPINK, expressing their intent to “become artists who, like BLACKPINK, find their unique color.” Equipped with the YG Entertainment DNA that nurtured both 2NE1 and BLACKPINK, BABYMONSTER is showing a distinctive attitude that has already piqued further interest in their future achievements.
