BLACKPINK Tops Spotify’s Global Chart…Frist as K-POP Female Artist
[OSEN=지민경 기자] The pre-release single of BLACKPINK’s second full album ‘Pink Venom’ topped Spotify’s Daily Top Song Global Chart released on the 20th (local time). This is the time a K-POP female artist reached such a feat.
It was found that BLACKPINK’s ‘Pink Venom’ recorded 7,937,036 streams on Spotify alone on the first day of its release (August 19th). This is the highest number of streams among female artists’ songs around the world, including all K-pop songs released this year.
‘Pink Venom’ successfully entered the top 200 chart in 71 countries, and among them, the song ranked sixth in the U.S. The reason why such feat is noteworthy is because Spotify is a highly influential music streaming platform that also affects the U.S. Billboard charts.
BLACKPINK ranked second on the Spotify’s Global Chart with its mega-hit song ‘How You Like That’ about two years ago. Not only this, but their other songs including ‘Lovesick Girls’ ranked third and both ‘Ice Cream’ and ‘Kill This Love’ ranked fourth, proving their strong presence in the global market.
As BLACKPINK has been expanding their influence by establishing themselves as ‘K-POP Queens’ and ‘YouTube Queens’, them topping Spotify’s Global Chart is very meaningful. Attention is now being drawn to what kind of history they will rewrite in the K-POP world, as ‘Pink Venom’ is a pre-release single of their 2nd full album.
‘Pink Venom’ is a hip-hop genre song that stresses BLACKPINK’s original charisma. Korean traditional sounds create perfect harmony with intense beat from the intro, and the powerful rap and strong vocals intensifies the charm all 4 members have.
The song has so far topped the iTunes chart in 73 countries including the U.S. and UK, and climbed up to the first spot of the world wide song chart. It also proved its unrivaled popularity by sweeping various charts of QQ Music, China’s largest music chart, such as downloads, popular new song, music video, and popularity indicator.
The music video is also showing explosive popularity. The ‘Pink Venom’ music video surpassed 100 million views in about 29 hours after its release. This was also the fastest K-pop girl group music video to reach such feat.
