[조선일보=이혜운 기자] Girl group BLACKPINK’s official debut album, ‘THE ALBUM’, was ranked at no. 2 on the US Billboard main album chart.

On October 11(local time), Billboard revealed, “BLACKPINK’s ‘THE ALBUM’ achieved approximately 110 album unit sales and is expected to enter the Billboard 200 chart as no. 2”. It is the best record in K-Pop girl group history. BLACKPINK has entered the ‘Billboard 200’ for the first time as a K-Pop girl group with their mini album ‘SQUARE UP’ back in June 2018, which debuted as no. 40. They also entered the same chart as no. 24 with ‘Kill This Love’, released last year on April.

BLACKPINK’s success overcomes weaknesses of girl groups, who have a relatively weaker fandom compared to boy groups, and even stands out in the US music market which is currently experiencing recession. Billboard revealed, “BLACKPINK’s numbers for the first week as no. 2 is the highest rank ever since the American girl group ‘Danity Kane’ was ranked at no. 1 through ‘Welcome to the Dollhouse’ back in April 2008”. Forbes, the American economics magazine, reported “BLACKPINK’s debut at no. 2 on Billboard’s album chart shows how big their presence became in the US market for the past year”.

BLACKPINK was also ranked at no. 2 on the UK Official Albums chart, announced on the 9th. UK’s Official Chart is known as one of the two biggest Pop charts in the world, along with US Billboard. They’ve also listed 3 songs on the UK Official Singles charts as well. The title track ‘Lovesick Girls’ was ranked at no. 40, ‘Bet You Wanna’ featuring Cardi B was ranked at no. 62, while the song ‘Ice Cream’ collaborated with Pop star Selena Gomez as a pre-release single on October, was ranked at no. 80.

The album also topped iTunes Album charts in 57 different countries including the US after its release on the 2nd, while the MV for its title track ‘Lovesick Girls’ topped the Global YouTube Song Top 100 chart.

Meanwhile, YG Entertainment revealed that the group’s original documentary produced by Netflix titled ‘BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky’ will premiere on the 14th. It is the fourth time that Netflix has produced an original documentary for a female artist, following Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift. A large billboard advertisement was placed to notify its premiere on the 12th(local time) at Times Square, New York.
