[매일경제 스타투데이=성정은 기자] BLACKPINK’s YouTube channel reached over 10 million subscribers.

As of August 16, at 10:30 AM, BLACKPINK’s official YouTube account has 100,733,762 subscribers. It is the highest record among all K-Pop boy and girl groups and is second among all K-Pop artists, only after PSY.

As BLACKPINK surpassed 10 million subscribers in the end of July, the group won the honor of receiving YouTube’s ‘Diamond Creator Award’ for the first time as a girl group.

The ‘Diamond Creator Award’ is one of the ‘YouTube Partner Awards’ which is given to account managers who surpassed a certain number of subscribers. It is the best award given by YouTube and represents a popular YouTube account.

There are three types of ‘YouTube Partner Awards’. Channels with over 100 thousand subscribers receive the Silver Award, channels with over 1 million subscribers receive the Gold Award, while channels with over 10 million subscribers receive the Diamond Creator Award.

The group proved their nickname as the ‘new record generators’ once again, through YouTube which serves as an objective index of awareness and popularity overseas.

After making debut on August 2016, BLACKPINK proved themselves as the ‘YouTube masters’ by surpassing 100 million views on all 6 videos released including ‘BOOMBAYAH’, ‘WHISTLE’, ‘PLAYING WITH FIRE’, ‘STAY’, ‘AS IF IT’S YOUR LAST’, and ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’.

The MV for the song ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ released on June also became the 2nd most watched MV on YouTube in the world in 24 hours since its release. The video was no. 1 in the world among all MVs released this year.

Furthermore, the MV for ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ surpassed 10 million views in 6 hours and swept all time related records previously held by other girl groups, until they reached 100 million views.

At the point when the video reached 150 million views, BLACKPINK set the fastest record among all girl and boy groups, eventually surpassing 200 million views in 33 days. The event was unprecedented in K-Pop group history as BLACKPINK’s new record shortened the previous record by 11 days.

Despite being a girl group that are regarded as having a weaker fandom compared to boy groups, BLACKPINK became the one and only group in K-Pop to reach 200 million views in the shortest amount of time.

While proving their global status and popularity on YouTube, BLACKPINK held their first arena tour in Japan on July 24, notifying their path as the rising global Pop stars. In the end of this year, the group will perform in Japan’s Kyocera Dome for the first time as a foreign girl group.
