[★FULL Interview] SECHSKIES Says, “Our dream has come true in 16 years and we’ll work hard to make the most of it.”

SECHSKIES is back. At 12 AM on December 1, SECHSKIES released its “2016 Re-ALBUM”. The album includes ten of SECHSKIES’s biggest hit songs, such as “COUPLE”, “CHIVALRY”, “HEARTBREAK”, “COM’BACK”, “ROAD FIGHTER”, “SCHOOL BYEOLGOK”, “TO YOU WHOM I LOVE”, as well as the group’s recently released single “THREE WORDS”.
The name of the album, “2016 Re-ALBUM”, means that the tracks have been re-recorded, rearranged and remastered. Ten of SECHSKIES’s hit songs have been chosen and rearranged in a more trendy style by YG’s producer team. The melodies are familiar, but it feels like a new song.
SECHSKIES was interviewed in the afternoon of December 1 at YG building in Hapjung-dong, Seoul. The members couldn’t hide their excitement over their first album in 16 years.
“We needed to bring some change in this album. Mr. Yang added a touch of YG feel into SECHSKIES’s old songs and turned them into new songs.” (EUN JIWON)
The album is doing well. “COUPLE”, one of the title tracks of the album, topped the realtime charts as of 9 AM on December 1, demonstrating the group’s unchanged popularity.
“I like to thank the fans for their support. “THREE WORD” did well on the charts and now “COUPLE” is doing well too. This makes me so proud. I was surprised to hear that people outside of Korea love our songs too. We’ve never had this before. Now I want to go abroad (laughs).” (EUN JIWON)
Adding to what EUN JIWON said, LEE JAIJIN made everyone laugh by revealing his real intention and saying, “There’s a limit to how much we can earn in Korea.”
The reunion of SECHSKIES was totally unexpected. tvN’s hit drama Reply 1997 made people take interest in H.O.T and SECHSKIES. Afterwards, SECHSKIES appeared on MBC’s Inifinite Challenge and held a surprise concert. The response of phenomenal, and this motivated the members to come together as a group again.
KANG SUNGHOON said, “I think the Reply drama series made people take more interest in the first generation idol groups and us.” EUN JIWON added, “Infinite Challenge was a good opportunity for us.”
Of course, not everything was perfect. KO JIYONG, who came to SECHSKIES’s surprise concert on Infinite Challenge, decided not to rejoin the group. Instead, he is going to appear on KBS 2TV’s child rearing show Superman Come Back.
“He has a job. He has work to do. We should respect that. We heard that the shooting of Superman Come Back takes place on the weekends not on weekdays. We get that he has to go to work on weekdays.” (KANG SUNGHOON)
The Reply dram series and Infinite Challenge played a big role in making SECHSKIES release an album for the first time in 16 years but YG Entertainment also played an important role.
“Our agency listens to what we have to say and respects our opinions. They hear us out first and then give us advice. HYUN SUK is more than just our boss and the CEO of our agency, he is like a big brother to us. I have a lot of respect for him. He came to see us at the Melon Music Awards and told us to keep our heads up and cheer up. He is a warm person and really like a brother to us. His words may be blunt, but his heart is warm.”(EUN JIWON)
It seems that YANG HYUN SUK has specific plans for SECHSKIES. He told them to not do any individual activities.
“He even wanted us to go on variety shows only as a group. So I had to quit a variety show I was doing. I’m also not going to do any more acting for the time being.”(JANG SUWON)
SECHSKIES’s reunion is not just a one-time event. They have already made plans to release new songs next year. Members are working hard and YANG HYUN SUK is behind them pushing them to work harder.
“We’re making new songs right now. We even recorded some of them. They are going to be released one by one from January next year. HYUN SUK doesn’t give us any time to rest. Our schedule is packed (laughs).” (EUN JIWON)
About the new song that will be released next year, KANG SUNGHOON said, “I’m old school so I like those old-fashioned songs more.” EUN JIWON said, “We’re going to combine the old with the new. We don’t plan to follow the current trend in music. We have our own style and we’re going to keep it.” (EUN JIWON)
“The biggest aim of this album is to let our new fans know that these are the kind of songs we use to sing. We want to maintain our style in our new songs.” (EUN JIWON)
Next year, SECHSKIES will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of its debut. The group has made many plans to celebrate this meaningful year.
“We’re definitely doing a 20th anniversary concert. This is my no.1 wish. We will sing our new songs at the concert.” (EUN JIWON)
“We want to do a 20th anniversary concert and lots of promotion activities in 2017.”(KANG SUNGHOON)
EUN JIWON laughed and said, “The biggest change after our reunion is that I’ve started to care about my looks. I want SECHSKIES to be loved by young fans.”
