[Issue is] Why Did YG Choose to Reveal the Title of iKON’s New Single 3 Days before Release?
[일간스포츠=엄동진 기자] iKON is going to release a single all of a sudden.
iKON, who had a great year in 2015 by sweeping nearly all the rookie awards, is going to release a new single titled “#WYD” at 12 AM on May 30. But, the way they are making a comeback is rather unusual.
It the first time that YG revealed the singer and the title of the new song three days before a comeback of its artist. It’s not just a surprise announcement but a “super” surprise announcement. YG is one of the top management companies in Korea. They are known for their meticulous preparations from the planning phase of a new song to its release. Marketing the new song is not an exception. They plan ahead and promote the new song strategically at least 15 days before its release. But this time, the announcement was made only three days before its release.
An YG official explained, “We expect ’#WYD’ to be a big hit, just as popular as ‘MY TYPE’. YG is currently working on both iKON’s new album and BOBBY’s new album to release them soon, but iKON will mostly be in China in May. So, ’#WYD’ is like a surprise present for the fans who are waiting for iKON’s comeback.”
iKON promoting their new single in May is going to be impossible as they will be abroad for the most of May. But they will be in Korea in June, and the YG official said, “In June, after the release of iKON and BOBBY’s new album, fans will be able to see them on TV a lot.”
Only nine months have passed since iKON debuted, but they swept the rookie awards at the end of last year. They have also successfully held a solo concert at the biggest indoor performance venue in Korea, the Olympic Gymnastics Stadium. They are well on their way to become a global star as they are on currently on a tour in Asia right after finishing their Japan tour.
iKON is also casted for China’s variety show The Remix along with PSY.
