A Big Change of Rules is Expected for the Last Season of K-Pop Star

On May 9, the production press conference of SBS’s variety show “Survival Audition K-Pop Star 6 (K-Pop Star 6)” took place at the SBS Studios in Mok-dong, Seoul. YANG HYUN SUK, You Hee-yeol, Park Jin-young, and the producers of the show, Park Sung-hoon and Jung Ik-seung, were at the conference to answer questions from the press.
K-Pop Star is an audition program to find new K-pop stars. It first aired in December 2011 and until now, five seasons have been aired. YANG HYUN SUK, You Hee-yeol, and Park Jin-young will appear as judges in season 6.
Park Sung-hoon, one of the producers of the show, surprised everyone by announcing the subtitle of K-Pop Star 6, the Last Chance, just as the press conference began. This shows that this season will be the last season of K-Pop Star.
But, the subtitle of K-Pop Star 6, the Last Chance, has a lot more meaning than that. For starters, rules have changed greatly. In the previous seasons, the winner got to pick the label. But in season 6, JYP Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and Antenna Music will co-produce an album for the winner.
Park Sung-hoon explained, “Until now, the winner went under a label of his or her choice and was awarded prize money. But in season 6, the three labels will collaborate to make and promote an album for the winner. They will each produce a song, so it will be an opportunity to see the difference in their producing styles.”
In addition, K-Pop Star 6 is also open to singers that have already debuted and trainees. They want to find new stars but also want to give new opportunities to underrated singers.
“The motto of the show was to make a global star like Twice or BIGBANG. We don’t need to go out of our way to find diamonds in the rough. I’m sure there are underrated singers around us who can become global stars if they can benefit from the production capabilities and promotions of the big labels. I want to see that happening in season 6” said YANG HYUN SUK.
As there is going to be a big change in rules, a lot of questions were asked at the press conference. Since singers who are currently under a label can also appear on the show, reporters were curious about how things will work after the show.
About this, YANG HYUN SUK said, “If the winner is under a label, then we will produce an album and after that the winner can go back to his or her label. If the winner isn’t under a label and wants to join one of our labels after the show, then we would negotiate individually.”
The production press conference left many wondering about how K-Pop Star 6 will unfold with the new rules. The shooting of K-Pop Star 6 will begin in the latter half of this year.
