PSY Has Topped Gaon’s Yearly Chart for 2 Years in a Row… “Top” in Music & Music Video Chart
[OSEN=이혜린 기자] Singer Psy has come to have the most loved digital music in Korea for two years in a row.
Psy topped Gaon’s digital chart last year with “Gangnam Style” and with “Gentleman” once again this year, becoming the hottest singer in Korea for two consecutive years.
Even though Gaon has not officially announced this year’s yearly top music yet, “Gentleman” is in the first place in the 2013 comprehensive record that had been collected until November 23 this year. Thus, as long as there is no unusual happening in the music world, Psy is expected to top the yearly music ranking chart. The chart’s rankings are calculated by combining the number of downloads and case of streaming. “Gentleman” is in the No.1 place in the chart, with the score that is higher than Baechigi’s “Tear Shower” in the second place by more than 30 million points.
Considering the fact that “Tear Shower” and SISTAR 19’s “Gone Not Around Any Longer” in the third place in the chart were released in January this year, “Gentleman”’s ranking in the top place proves the song’s unrivalled popularity, since it was released in April.
The spotlight is now shed on whether Psy will be able to top the yearly chart for three years in a row. As Psy’s comeback schedule is expected to be disclosed soon, even though the exact date has yet to be announced, people are paying keen attention to if Psy’s new song will become the biggest hit of the year 2014, too. Psy is known to have prepared three or four “nice” new songs, and has already given some clues about his new album by disclosing some spoiler cuts such as his photo taken with hip-hop mogul SnoopDogg.
As a song released in January recorded good performance on Gaon’s digital chart this year because of the cumulative characteristic of music charts and Psy has a brand power that causes a large number of “clicks” by exciting not only music fans but also the general public, Psy is enough to target No.1 place for three consecutive years.
His music video is expected to become the most-watched video around the world for two years in a row. The music video of “Gentleman” has reached 600 million views recently and been ranked in the first place in YouTube’s total chart, beating Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball”, the runner-up, by a big margin of 200 million views. Such record is another big achievement following “Gangnam Style”’s big success last year, which has recently recorded 1.8 billion views.
YouTube selected “Gentleman” as this year’s “Top Trending Music Video of 2013”, following its selection of “Gangnam Style” for 2012. Besides, Psy has proven his unending popularity by winning awards for six sections of Billboard’s year-end awards, including Dance/Electronic Streaming Song Artist section.
Psy will spend this year’s end with Korean fans for the first time in two years, by holding “Moonlight Exercise” concert that will be held for four days from the 20 to 24 this month (not on the 23) at Olympic Park’s Gymnastics Hall located in Seoul. The concert is now in the top of Interpark’s yearly concert ticket sales chart and is expected to attract total 60,000 people, 12,000 for each one of total five concerts.
