BLACKPINK’s ‘THE ALBUM’ Selected as the ‘Best Album of 2020’ by US Billboard
[한국경제TV=유병철 기자] BLACKPINK’s official debut album ‘THE ALBUM’ was listed on the ‘Best Albums of 2020’ list selected by the staff of US Billboard, acknowledged not only for its public popularity but also for its musical worth.
On December 7(local time), US Billboard announced ‘The 50 Best Albums of 2020: Staff Picks’. BLACKPINK’s ‘THE ALBUM’ was ranked at no. 25, which was the highest among all K-Pop albums released this year.
Billboard reviewed, “’The album contains 8 different ‘A-grade K-Pop’ tracks arranging from Hip-hop to Dance Pop, which suits the title of the album, ‘THE ALBUM’(direct and symbolic)”. They also introduced, “High-profile collaborations with Selena Gomez and Cardi B paired with BLACKPINK’s hit sounds emphasized the group’s charms”. Billboard also praised the group by writing, “BLACKPINK provides the perfect entry point for soon-to-be Blinks”, and that “BLACKPINK is the revolution”.
BLACKPINK has solidified their dominant status in the global music market this year through active releases and promotional activities. Starting with their collaborative song ‘Sour Candy’ released with Lady Gaga back in May, the group re-wrote K-Pop girl group records through all new releases including ‘How You Like That’ released on June, ‘Ice Cream’ released on August, and their official debut album ‘THE ALBUM’ released on October.
The song ‘How You Like That’ from the album was selected as the ‘Song of the Summer’ at the ‘2020 MTV Video Music Awards’ held in August, while the group’s official debut album ‘THE ALBUM’ was ranked at no. 2 on the US Billboard 200 and UK’s Official Albums Chart on the week of its release and successfully charted in for 8 and 7 consecutive weeks respectively, setting the best·longest records in K-Pop girl group history.
Due to their remarkable success, BLACKPINK is receiving spotlights from year-end award ceremonies in and out of Korea and major media channels.
As well as being listed on Billboard’s ‘Best Albums of 2020’ list, BLACKPINK’s ‘Ice Cream’ from their official debut album was ranked at no. 13 on the 50 ‘Best Songs of 2020’ list announced by Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone spotlighted the group by writing, “BLACKPINK created a sensation in the US music industry”.
BLACKPINK has recently received the ‘Group of the Year’ award for the first time as a K-Pop group at the US ‘Variety Hitmakers’, as well as receiving the ‘Global Popular Group’ award at China QQ Music’s ‘Boom Boom Awards’.
They also won 2 trophies(Best Female Dance Award·Top 10) at the ‘2020 Melon Music Awards(MMA)’, 3 trophies(Best Female Group·Best Female Group Dance Performance·Worldwide Fans’ Choice) at the ‘2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards(MAMA)’, and was selected as the ‘2020 Visionary’ by CJ ENM.
Meanwhile, BLACKPINK is currently preparing for their upcoming livestream concert ‘THE SHOW'(YG PALM STAGE – 2020 BLACKPINK: THE SHOW). Since it will be the first concert being held after the release of ‘THE ALBUM’, the people are looking forward to the fantastic performances to be presented by BLACKPINK.
