iKON→BLACKPINK→JENNIE→MINO… Music Charts of 2018 Starts and Ends with YG [Oh!SSEN LETTER]

From iKON and BLACKPINK who dominated the first half of 2018 to BLACKPINK’s JENNIE and WINNER’s MINO who dominated the second half of 2018, artists of YG are continuing their no. 1 relay on music charts.
iKON started the YG’s flower road in music charts of 2018. iKON created a sing-along wave with their mega-hit song, titled ‘LOVE SCENARIO’. The song with catchy yet strong melodies and emotional lyrics was loved by listeners of all ages from kindergarten children to middle-aged adults, becoming the biggest hit of the year.
iKON also received the Best Song of the Year Award from the ‘2018 Melon Music Awards’ held in Seoul Gocheok Sky Dome on December 1, with their song ‘LOVE SCENARIO’. As a result, iKON received their first-ever grand prize on a music awards ceremony since the group’s debut back in 2015. The song ‘LOVE SCENARIO’ released on January topped music charts for 43 days since its release. It was the longest record in boy group history in the past 3 years. With iKON’s amazing results, no one could deny that ‘LOVE SCENARIO’ was the biggest hit in the K-Pop scene of 2018.
The music charts of the summer were decorated by BLACKPINK. BLACKPINK made comeback with the song ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ and maintained their no. 1 spot on music charts for 29 days. The record was more meaningful since the group kept their top position despite the continues summer comebacks made by other popular K-Pop artists.
With the song ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’, BLACKPINK established themselves as a global girl group. The MV for ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ surpassed 10 million views on YouTube in 6 hours since its release, and renewed the fastest records in K-Pop girl group history every time they gained another 10 million views. BLACKPINK even started to set the fastest records in all boy and girl group history at the point the MV reached 150 million views. The video reached 200 million views in 33 days, which shortened the pre-existing record by 11 days, then reached 300 million views while shortening the previous record by 100 days. The video even became the second most watched MV in the world on YouTube among all artists of the world. BLACKPINK not only dominated the K-Pop scene, but also the global music market while rewriting new history.
Hard work by artists of YG continued during the second half of the year as well. Following her team activities, BLACKPINK’s JENNIE achieved an ‘all-kill’ in music charts with her first-ever solo single, ‘SOLO’. After dominating music charts as soon as the song was released, JENNIE continued her no. 1 march on the music charts of November, which is often regarded as a fierce battlefield. Despite the comeback rush by popular artists of K-Pop, JENNIE’s ‘SOLO’ maintained its top position and established JENNIE as the real ‘Winner’ of the K-Pop scene on November.
YG’s influence on music chart continued, even on December. MINO received the baton from JENNIE who proved herself as ‘god-JENNIE’, and is currently dominating music charts as a solo artist. He released his first solo album titled ‘XX’, and is currently maintaining his no. 1 spot on music charts for 9 days with the title song of his album, ‘FIANCÉ’.
The song ‘FIANCÉ’ combines a popular song from the 70s titled ‘Soyanggang Maid’ with Hip-Hop, creating a new genre called ‘Trot Hip-Hop’. After taking steps as a solo artist through songs such as ‘Fear’ released through ‘Show Me The Money’ and ‘BODY’ through MOBB, MINO proved his musical caliber as a solo artist different from what he used to present as a member of WINNER, with his first solo album ‘XX’. ‘FIANCÉ’ is currently maintaining its top position on music charts for 9 days. MINO is also proving his global influence by topping iTunes Album Charts in 16 different countries and Song Charts in 9 different countries.
YG is the start and end on music charts of 2018. That is precisely the reason why it is not an exaggeration to say, that 2018 was the year of YG.
