[Pop-up TV] SECHSKIES’ explosive popularity even surprised YANG HYUN SUK… Their second golden days have begun

[헤럴드POP=임지연 기자] The second golden days of SECHSKIES, who recently made a new beginning after 16 years of hiatus, have begun. SECHSKIES is currently boasting big popularity and influence comparable to the big popularity they enjoyed in the 1990’s. 

SECHSKIES has recently been reunited after 16 years of hiatus in their career since 2000 when the team was disbanded. This month, SECHSKIES released digital single “THREE WORDS”. “THREE WORDS” is SECHSKIES’ first song since their last album “Blue Note” released at the time of the team’s breakup. As the news that the song’s lyrics were written by EPIK HIGH’s TABLO with SECHSKIES’ fans in mind, the song drew big attention from even before its release. 

The release of “THREE WORDS” was announced just a day before its release. Despite the abrupt release, “THREE WORDS” took No.1 not only on major music charts in Korea but also charts in China and Taiwan, to mark successful comeback of SECHSKIES. 

In NAVER V-APP broadcasting “SECHS KIES NEWS EP2” aired in the evening on October 12, SECHSKIES talked about their new life as an idol boy group for the past two months. 

First, SECHSKIES members talked about what it was like at their comeback concert on September 9 and 10 at Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul. The tickets of the concert were all sold out in five minutes of opening. SECHSKIES’ leader Eun Ji-won said, “I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for so many people who came to our first concert in 16 years to welcome us”. The members also said that they wanted to stand on the stage of another concert as soon as possible. Jang Soo-won said, “It was the first concert after a very long time of our separation, so I don’t think I could fully enjoy it. I definitely want to do it again”. 

Then, SECHSKIES talked about their new song “THREE WORDS”. Eun Ji-won said, “We’re the first idol boy group who topped daily chart this year. Of course, more great singers will release their new songs from now on until the end of the year, but as of now anyway, we’re the first. They say it is a remarkable success. I feel satisfied and rewarded”. Jang Soo-won said, “It is all thanks to our fans’ streaming. Thank you”. 

The song’s music video is also creating sensation. The video is known to have been edited directly by YG Entertainment’s leader YANG HYUN SUK. Jang Soo-won said, “YANG HYUN SUK has special affection for SECHSKIES. He directly edited the music video of ‘THREE WORDS’”. Eun Ji-won said, “He edited every single scene so carefully. There is a scene in the video, which shows our past and present and fans’ past and present overlapping. It was really touching”. 

SECHSKIES recently performed at BOF’s opening ceremony, Orange Card Family Concert, etc. For every occasion, large group of SECHSKIES’ fans came to see their performances. For the opening ceremony of BOF held on October 1 in Busan, about 6,000 fans of SECHSKIES flocked to Busan by more than 60 large buses. SECHSKIES’ such big popularity and influence comparable to that of young idol boy groups surprised YG Entertainment’s CEO YANG HYUN SUK. Jang Soo-won said, “Other singers were surprised, we were surprised, and all the staff were surprised”. 

Eun Ji-won said, “YANG HYUN SUK was also surprised by (SECHSKIES’ popularity) and posted words ‘the limitless power of Yellow Kies’ on his personal social media account”. He went on to express his gratitude for fans by saying, “We gave a performance and all the people at the concert talked about how they ‘respected our fan club’ rather than our performance itself. Fans waved flags as well, which was a really touching scene”. 

Tickets for the concert were sold-out, the new song is sweeping top places on charts, and numerous fans flock to see them. As such, SECHSKIES has come back as a popular boy group, not just as one of those past sensations. There are many reasons why SECHSKIES still has big appeals to the public, and one of them is the members’ young and still-handsome appearances. Eun Ji-won said, “I heard it from a friend of mine that foreign fans gave us a nickname of the ‘king of anti-aging’. I’m really grateful for that”. Jang Soo-won said, “People are interested in us for many reasons and I heard that our appearance just like other idol boy groups is drawing keen attention from people. I think that is why people talk about the ‘anti-aging’ thing. I’m grateful”. 

In the meantime, SECHSKIES will recruit their official fan club “Yellow Kies” from October 17, for the first time in 16 years. Plus, SECHSKIES will operate “Yellow Space” in Itaewon from the 16 to 19 this month, to build more good memories with fans.
