[Music Talk Talk] iKON Achieves a Triple Crown by Topping M Countdown and Oricon Charts and Winning an Award at Seoul Music Awards
[OSEN=정준화 기자] iKON became No.1 on Oricon and M Countdown charts in addition to winning the New Star Award at the Seoul Music Awards. Calling them a monster rookie is not enough given that only four months have passed since their debut.
Even before their official debut, iKON swept the online charts with “MY TYPE”. All the songs that they released afterwards, “RHYTHM TA”, “APOLOGY” and “DUMB & DUMBER” – the title track of their debut full album, became huge hits. With “DUMB & DUMBER”, iKON even took the No.1 spot on the chart of a music show. Their debut in Japan was also successful.
iKON’s “DUMB & DUMBER” became No.1 on the chart of Mnet’s M Countdown aired on January 14. The winners are selected based on the following criteria: online and offline sales scores, preference score, social media score, and Mnet show score.
Becoming No.1 on the chart of a music show means that he or she is a huge selling artist both online and offline and has a wide fan base. In terms of online sales, there is no doubt that iKON has a huge selling power as their debut full album singles, including “DUMB & DUMBER”, have topped seven online charts upon release.
Fans’ votes are also an important factor. If the singer has a wide fan base, this means that he or she has a big advantage. It’s not easy for a rookie to have a huge fan base but iKON proved that they have one by dominating online charts and topping offline charts within four months of their debut.
Their debut in Japan was also successful. iKON released their Japan debut album titled “WELCOME BACK” and more than 53,000 copies were sold. On the day of its release, the album became No.1 on Oricon’s Daily Album Chart. A little more than a hundred days have passed since iKON debuted, but they have taken Japan by storm with their album by topping the charts upon release. iKON’s Japan debut album contains the Japanese versions of iKON’s hit songs such as “MY TYPE”, “RHYTHM TA”, and “AIRPLANE” as well as iKON’s pre-debut songs such as “CLIMAX”, “JUST ANOTHER BOY”, and “SINOSIJAK”.
iKON also won the New Star Award at the 25th Seoul Music Awards on January 14. It’s their second time winning an award after winning one at 2015 MAMA in December last year.
The reason they were able to achieve so much was because they spent years as trainees. iKON members had to go through two survival shows – “WIN” and “MIX & MATCH” before their debut. It is not an exaggeration to say that they are in their fourth year as professional musicians.
iKON managed to come up with great new music, and fans responded accordingly four times in a row. They released new music every month and took the No.1 spot every month. This means that they are diverse enough to satisfy everyone. iKON was able to pull off being sweet with “MY TYPE”, sensitive with “APOLOGY”, and intense with “RHYTHM TA” and “DUMB & DUMBER” and such different sides of iKON enthralled people. Expectations are running high for what iKON has in store for us in the future.
Just like true “monster rookie”, iKON has swept the rookie awards at 2015 Melon Music Awards, 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards, and the 25th Seoul Music Awards. But for iKON, this is just the beginning.
