200 Million Views In 33 Days…BABYMONSTER is the Real Deal!
[스포츠동아=허민녕 기자] “The real thing always resonates.”
YG Entertainment’s (YG) rookie girl group BABYMONSTER is taking the world by storm. True to YG’s philosophy of producing only genuine talent, their popularity is spreading rapidly on a global scale, reminiscent of their label seniors BLACKPINK, drawing significant attention.
YouTube and Billboard, widely regarded as benchmarks of global pop music trends, are clear indicators of their rapid rise. BABYMONSTER’s debut music video, “SHEESH,” has surpassed 200 million views on YouTube, while also making a significant impact on Billboard by ranking in key charts for five consecutive weeks, proving their worth as “rising monster rookies.”
According to the latest Billboard charts (Korean time, May 8), the title track of BABYMONSTER’s 1st MINI ALBUM [BABYMONS7ER], “SHEESH,” ranked 21st on the Global (excluding U.S.) chart and 47th on the Global 200 chart. These rankings are a 9 and 13-step rise from the previous week, respectively, extending their consecutive charting record to five weeks while showing a steady trend of rising popularity.
The buzz is even hotter on YouTube. BABYMONSTER quickly joined the ranks of top-tier streamers, with “SHEESH” surpassing 200 million views just 33 days after its release, making it the fastest K-pop girl group debut song to reach that milestone. Compared to BLACKPINK’s debut track “BOOMBAYAH,” BABYMONSTER achieved this record 340 days faster. The “BOOMBAYAH” music video reached 200 million views 370 days after its release in 2017 and currently has over 1.6 billion views.
The music industry acknowledges that BABYMONSTER’s successful debut was backed by YG’s relentless philosophy, emphasizing “completion” over “growth.” BABYMONSTER only revealed their full lineup over a year after the team name was announced. Like 2NE1 and BLACKPINK before them, they embody “YG-style performance idols,” showcasing strength in live performances.
Riding on this momentum, BABYMONSTER will embark on a debut commemorative fan concert tour across Tokyo, Jakarta, Singapore, Taipei, and Bangkok. Their first stop is the 10,000-seat Ariake Arena in Tokyo, where both performances on the 11th and 12th are sold out, proving their popularity.
