[텐아시아=최지예 기자] Group BLACKPINK won a trophy at ‘2020 Hitmakers’, the famous American award ceremony, for the first time as a K-Pop girl group.
Group BLACKPINK received the ‘Group of the Year’ award at ‘Variety’s Hitmakers Program’ which began broadcasting live on December 4 at 10 AM(KST).
‘Hitmakers’ is an award ceremony which selects singer-songwriters, producers, composers, and labels that contributed to the production of the most popular songs of the year. BLACKPINK stood tall next to global stars including Harry Styles, J. Balvin, Charli XCX, and Lewis Capaldi this year at the award ceremony.
The members of BLACKPINK revealed their thoughts by stating, “It would’ve been impossible without the fans” and added, “2020 was a meaningful year for all of us. We’ve released our first official debut album and received encouraging messages from everyone. We’d like to thank BLINK(fandom) once again. We love you”.
Variety paid attention to the fact that BLACKPINK has been very successful in the US music market this year, based on their steady growth. Variety explained, “BLACKPINK has been collaborating with Pop stars such as Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez this year, after becoming the first-ever K-Pop group to perform at Coachella in 2019”. They also added, “Their song ‘How You Like That’ also set a record of reaching 86.3M views on YouTube in 24 hours since its release”.
Regarding BLACKPINK’s official debut album ‘THE ALBUM’, they left favorable reviews by commenting, “The album not only topped iTunes Album charts in 57 different countries but allowed BLACKPINK to become the first-ever million selling K-Pop girl group”. They also added, “BLACKPINK has recently shown change as the ‘group of singers’ for the past couple of years. This group has a unique character”.
Variety also recalled, “Approximately 1 out of 4 from total sales of ‘THE ALBUM’ took place in the US, while the song ‘Ice Cream’ from the album was ranked within the US Top 40 Radio Chart”. It shows BLACKPINK’s presence and influence in the US, which is the country with the biggest Pop music market in the world.
Meanwhile, BLACKPINK will hold their first-ever livestream concert titled ‘YG PALM STAGE – 2020 BLACKPINK: THE SHOW’ on the 27th at 2 PM(KST).
