“Song of the Summer”… BLACKPINK Wins US MTV’s VMA
[TV리포트=이윤희 기자] Group BLACKPINK became the first K-Pop girl group to win a trophy on MTV’s Video Music Awards. They’ve won the trophy in a year since they entered the US market, which adds more meaning.
On the ‘2020 MTV Video Music Awards(hereby VMA)’ held on the 30th(local time), ‘How You Like That’ won the ‘Song of the Summer’ award. Cardi B’s ‘WAP’, DJ Khaled’s ‘Popstar’, and Dua Lipa’s ‘Break My Heart’ were the candidates that competed for the award.
Since the award was created back in 2013, artists including One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer, Fifth Harmony, Lil Uzi Vert, Cardi B, Bunny·J. Balvin, and Ariana Grande·Social House have received the award. BLACKPINK rewrote history by becoming the first Asian girl group to win the ‘Song of the Summer’ award in ‘MTV VMA’ history.
It has been rare for girl groups to receive awards at the ‘MTV VMA’, which has a long tradition which goes back to 1984. Including the legendary American girl group TLC, Destiny’s Child, Pussy Cat Dolls, Spice Girls, and Fifth Harmony have won awards prior to BLACKPINK. One can realize BLACKPINK’s strong presence since they’ve also been nominated as the ‘Best Group’, in addition to the ‘Song of the Summer’ category.
BLACKPINK’s ‘How You Like That’ MV, released on June 28, set numerous world records on YouTube including the ‘Most Watched Video in 24 Hours’ category. The video then set the fastest YouTube MV records by reaching 100M views in 32 hours, 200M views in 7 days, 300M views in 21 days, and 400M views in 43 days.
They also set meaningful records by creating sensations on overseas charts. The song achieved an ‘all-kill’ on major Korean music charts, topped iTunes charts in 64 countries after its release, was placed at no. 2 on Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart and was ranked at no. 33 and at no. 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and UK’s Official Singles Top 100 respectively, setting the best records in K-Pop girl group history.
Meanwhile, BLACKPINK has released their pre-release single ‘Ice Cream’ from their upcoming album to be released on October 2, which is widely popular among fans. The song was ranked at no. 1 on the iTunes Worldwide Song chart on the date of its release and is placed on the top ranks of Spotify’s Global Top 50 and US Top 50 charts.
