US PAPER, “BLACKPINK Suggests the New Kind of Supergroup”
[엑스포츠뉴스=전아람 기자] Girl group BLACKPINK was selected as 2019’s most influential K-Pop artist in the web culture and social media categories.
‘PAPER’, the American culture and arts magazine, announced the winners of 2019’s ‘The Break the Internet Awards’ on the 14th(local time). BLACKPINK grabbed a spot on the list by winning the ‘K-Pop Sensation’ category.
While global Pop stars and celebrities such as Rihanna and Billie Eilish were selected as winners on multiple categories, BLACKPINK brought up the genre of ‘K-Pop’ on the list of award selection categories with their influence.
Through their song ‘Kill This Love’ released last year on April, BLACKPINK started a K-Pop sensation through YouTube and social media, proving their influential power throughout the entire globe.
PAPER spotlighted the fact that the music video for ‘Kill This Love’ renewed the existing record by reaching 56.7 million views in the first 24 hours since the song was released, in addition to BLACKPINK’s live performances including their performance at Coachella.
PAPER wrote, “When it comes to global sensations, BLACKPINK is one of the biggest. The triumphant horns of ‘Kill This Love’ is clearly spreading”. They’ve added, “BLACKPINK has suggested the new kind of supergroup”.
BLACKPINK is the K-Pop artist group with the most number of Instagram followers in the world and is showing influential power in social media as much as they do through music. The individual member accounts and BLACKPINK’s official Instagram account have surpassed 20 million each, while the number continues to rise.
The music video for ‘Kill This Love’ has recently surpassed 700 million views, in less than a year since the video was released. The explosive increase in view count make the people realize BLACKPINK and K-Pop’s popularity and growth through YouTube and social media.
At the time of its release, ‘Kill This Love’ entered Billboard’s ‘Hot 100’ and ‘Billboard 200’ as no. 41 and no. 24 respectively, setting the first and best records in K-Pop girl group history. They’ve also set the longest record by charting on both charts for 4 consecutive weeks.
In addition, the song was also ranked at no. 33 on UK’s Official Singles Chart ‘Top 100’, which is the best record in K-Pop girl group history, as well as charting on the according chart for 5 consecutive weeks.
Last year, BLACKPINK met the global fans by holding their first-ever world tour, consisted of 32 concerts held in a total of 23 cities in 4 continents. The group is currently on a dome tour in Japan which began last year on December and will decorate the finale of their tour in Fukuoka Yafuoku! Dome on February 22.
BLACKPINK is working on their new album in addition to their dome tour. As the group has led the world to ‘Kill This Love’ sensation in 2019, people are paying keen attention on the new music that will be presented by BLACKPINK.
