BLACKPINK Shines Coachella Festival for the First Time as a K-Pop Group, ‘Perfect 60 Minutes’… Audience Sing-Along

[OSEN=김은애 기자] BLACKPINK shined Coachella Festival, the biggest music festival of the US, for the first time as a K-Pop idol group. They presented a performance scale on par with their MV as well as making the audience sing-along to their songs.

On April 12(local time) in Indio, California, BLACKPINK performed at ‘Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival’.

BLACKPINK first started their performance with their hit ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ which reached 700 million views. BLACKPINK presented their explosive vocals while wearing glamorous outfits in black and white.

In addition, the band session and BLACKPINK’s choreography created a high-quality performance. The audience sang along to ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’, responding with passionate support.

After singing ‘FOREVER YOUNG’, BLACKPINK shared greetings with the audience. BLACKPINK revealed their thoughts by stating, “Let’s have fun tonight. Thank you for coming” and added, “Our dreams have come true. We’ll be singing in Korean, but sing-along with us if you know the lyrics”.

BLACKPINK followed up with ‘BOOMBAYAH’, ‘PLAYING WITH FIRE’, ‘AS IF IT’S YOUR LAST’, ‘WHISTLE’, and ‘KISS&MAKE UP’ collaborated with Dua Lipa, making the crowd go wild. The audience enjoyed their performance while yelling, “BLACKPINK IN YOUR AREA”.

BLACKPINK’s stage manners also stood out. ROSÉ handed out the mic to the audience, while JENNIE showed off her energy by roaming the entire stage. JISOO presented her soft vocals while LISA presented her dominant charisma.

BLACKPINK did not forget to make witty comments throughout their show. In fluent English, ROSÉ and LISA stated, “How many people are here today” in awe, surprised at the scale of the concert. JISOO revealed her love for the fans by stating, “Thank you for coming tonight. We love you”. JENNIE cutely promoted their US tour by stating, “We’re having a concert in LA”.

BLACKPINK made the crowd cheer by continuously performing ‘KILL THIS LOVE’, ‘DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO’, and ‘KICK IT’, which are new songs released on the 5th. Moreover, BLACKPINK put the audience in awe by performing the group choreography shown through the MV during their performance of ‘KILL THIS LOVE’.

In addition, the group presented a varied performance by presenting JENNIE’s solo track, ‘SOLO’. The audience sang-along to the chorus of JENNIE’s ‘SOLO’ with passion.

While performing a total of 13 songs, BLACKPINK presented steady vocal skills even while performing group choreography. BLACKPINK’s performance at Coachella was live-streamed through a large-scale billboard in Times Square, New York, becoming a hot topic among global fans.

BLACKPINK is scheduled to perform on the 19th as well. The group will stand tall among global artists such as Ariana Grande, Khalid, and Zedd. Surpassing their global fandom, BLACKPINK performed at Coachella for the ‘first time as an idol group’, to set a new milestone in K-Pop history.

PAUL TOLLET, the founder of Coachella, is said to have visited Korea himself to invite BLACKPINK. Coachella, the biggest music festival of the US, has been known as a festival covering various genres of music including Rock, Hip-hop, and Electronic.

In Coachella, approximately 200 teams perform in a space which is 92 times larger than Jamsil Stadium in Seoul for 2 weeks(weekends), while almost 250 thousand music fans participated last year. As most participants of Coachella are people of the millennium generation, it is a festival not only for music but also for fashion, lifestyle, and the culture in general. World-famous musicians such as DRAKE, BEYONCE, EMINIEM, POST MALONE, and CALVIN HARRIS have all performed at the according festival.

Meanwhile, BLACKPINK’s ‘KILL THIS LOVE’ is renewing world records after its release on the 5th. The song was ranked at no. 1 on iTunes Song charts in 37 different regions of the world, including the US. They were the first K-Pop girl group to top the US iTunes Song chart.

Furthermore, according to UK’s Official Charts, BLACKPINK’s ‘KILL THIS LOVE’ entered the Official Singles Chart Top 100 as no. 33 and Album Chart Top 100 as no. 40, respectively. The MV for ‘KILL THIS LOVE’ became the most watched video on YouTube in the first 24 hours, while setting another world record by surpassing 100 million views on YouTube in 2 days and 14 hours since its release.
