[33rd Golden Disc Awards] iKON, From Debut Group B Without a Team Name→Winning the Song of the Year Award
[일간스포츠=김연지 기자] The boys who were part of team B, a group preparing to make debut without a proper team name back in 2013 won the Daesang award at the Golden Disc Awards 6 years later. The story is about group iKON.
On the 33rd Golden Disc Awards held in Gocheok Skydome, Guro-gu, Seoul, iKON won the Digital Song of the Year award with ‘LOVE SCENARIO’. It is their first Daesang won at the Golden Disc Awards. iKON appeared on Mnet’s ‘WIN : Who is Next?’ for the first time back in 2013. This program split trainees of YG Entertainment into teams A and B, and let the winning team make debut after a fierce competition. The team that won was team A, currently known as group WINNER. Team B was iKON, who had to drink the bitter cup of defeat.
Their hardships did not end here. Team B had to compete once again for their goal of making debut through Mnet’s ‘MIX & MATCH’ the following year B.I, JAY, BOBBY, SONG, JU-NE, DK, and CHAN were finally able to set foot on the K-Pop scene as iKON after winning the competition. iKON made a splendid debut and received the Rookie of the Year award back in 2015. The group made steady progress, but their achievements and growth speed were not enough compared to BIGBANG of YG Entertainment.
The actual ‘flower road’ of iKON’s music career finally began to open last year. The title song ‘LOVE SCENARIO’ from the group’s 2nd album ‘RETURN’ released last year on January became a massive hit. Not only the fans of iKON, but all kindergarten and elementary school children sang-along to the song, creating syndromes and letting iKON become the center of attention. The song became a ‘national song’, loved by people of all gender and generations. The social media and video platforms were flooded with ‘LOVE SCENARIO’ covers. The melody catchy enough to hum to it, even if they don’t know the names and faces of iKON members. They presented the true power of music, surpassing all generations. As a result of the nationwide popularity of the song, iKON won the honor of receiving the Golden Disc Digital Song of the Year award. Since they received the Daesang award through the song ‘LOVE SCENARIO’ which members B.I and BOBBY participated in both composing and writing of the track, people are beginning to have higher expectations on their future career and music to be released.
iKON’s achievement also acts as a signal announcing the group’s leap to the next level. The people are paying keen attention on what kind of milestones the group will set in the K-Pop scene and what kind of messages the group will present through their lyrics and melodies written by the members themselves.
