[33rd Golden Disc Awards] iKON Receives the Most Number of Votes by Judges on Daesang Evaluations… Wins Digital Song of the Year Award
[일간스포츠=황지영 기자] The 33rd Golden Disc Awards added ‘fairness’ on top of ‘empathy’. While the awards ceremony selected winners which the viewers of all generations can agree with, group iKON won the honorable Digital Daesang trophy.
The digital awards section aggregates statistics on digital music released from December 2017 to November 2018 (Gaon Chart). If an artist has released multiple tracks, only the representative track with the highest statistics was chosen as a nominee, while project music including variety and drama soundtracks were excluded from the Daesang and Bonsang evaluations.
The comprehensive scores were determined by adding sales(70%) and professional evaluations(30%), the same standard from the album awards section. The statistics from Gaon Charts were converted to scores and were used as data for quantitative evaluation. The effort assessment was done by 30 judges composed of K-Pop professionals including the executive committee of the Golden Disc Awards, related officials from major Korean music distributors, broadcast station producers, critics, and journalists. The executive committee have had a heated debate on the credibility of real-time charts, as some tracks were ranked at no. 1 despite receiving the support from the majority of platform users. As a result, a more fair and convincing evaluation was necessary. The executive committee revealed, “We raised the effort assessment factor and evaluated all nominees with care in addition to the quantitative index provided by the public”.
As a result of the evaluations, artists from YG Entertainment competed for the Digital Daesang this year. iKON and BLACKPINK both had high numbers on the quantitative statistics and received high scores on effort evaluations. The final score differed only by 3.4, allowing the people to realize YG’s strong influence on music charts this year.
iKON’s ‘LOVE SCENARIO’ received a 17 out of 30 votes on the subjective evaluations, which was the highest number of votes. Nominees including BTS(9 votes), BLACKPINK(1 vote), TWICE(1 vote), and ZICO (1 vote) followed. On the multiple selection evaluations on determining the winners of the Bonsang award, iKON received a total of 25 votes, only next to BTS(29 votes) and BLACKPINK(27 votes). iKON won the honor of receiving the Daesang trophy by receiving the highest number of votes and dominantly high chart scores.
The executive committee of the Golden Disc Awards stated, “As the form of digital music releases and methods have diversified with the development of the K-Pop music market, music platforms are also increasing in number and size. The Golden Disc Awards value fairness and trust as our highest priorities and will portray the fast-changing trend and flow of the K-Pop music scene with flexibility”.
