[Exclusive] Psy donates 500 million won from his ‘Gentleman’ sales
Psy announced that he will be donating a total of 500 million won from his exclusive concert dubbed Happening and from the sales of his new song ‘Gentleman.’
On April 12, Psy’s new song ‘Gentleman’ was unveiled to the world, and the sales from the song is yet to be calculated, but Psy decided to open his own purse for a 500 million won donation. Psy told YG that he is taking into account the sales from both the concert and the song sale which he will be receiving in the near future, and came to the decision on April 24.
His philanthropic act is a way to express his gratitude for the people who have helped him to rise to global stardom. He told the fans, “the love from you is what you keeps me going. I am going to pay you back through my music, and I want to keep making donations for people who are left behind. I am going to spare no effort for it.”
Psy, who held a concert just before ‘Gentleman’ officially went public, said at Happening, “I wouldn’t have been able to succeed overseas if it wasn’t for you Korean fans.” He was in tears of joy when he saw his fans cheering him on at the concert, and repeatedly expressed his thanks to them.
The entire donation will be given to children with cancer. According to personnel from YG Entertainment, Psy has been giving a lot thought on how to pay back the love he has received, and finally decided to follow the path of other celebrities in Korea. It is said that Psy is doing what his boss and CEO of YG, Yang Hyun-suk did, who in March donated 1 billion won of his YG dividend to marginalized and sick children.
Psy made the decision just before he left for the U.S. on April 25. He will be travelling across the world to kick start the promotion of ‘Gentleman’, and he will continue to make donations from the profit he gains from overseas performances.
Yang, as the major shareholder of YG Entertainment, has donated 1 billion won to marginalized children with diseases. The Entertainment as a whole has been carrying out a campaign called WITH, and has been conducting a company-scale donation program for a while.
