[한국일보=양승준 기자] Group BLACKPINK will be taking part in an event related to environmental protection next month along with former U.S. President Barack Obama and Pope Francis

According to YG Entertainment on the 24th, BLACKPINK will be taking part in Google’s “Dear Earth” event as a special speaker on YouTube Original. The event is a campaign where world-wide celebrities take part and stress the importance of the environment through various means such as speech and music. An official at YG Entertainment said “BLACKPINK will be delivering a meaningful message to fans around the world with the aim of increasing the awareness of climate change”. They also added that “Along with the speech, the group is also planning on showing a performance”.

Well-known figures such as Sundar Pichai, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Google and Alphabet, former Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and U.S. pop star Billy Eilish will be taking part in the event.

BLACKPINK was the only K-POP singer to be invited in the event. It seems that BLACKPINK’s unrivaled influence online such as having the greatest number of YouTube subscribers among artists around the world served as the background for the invitation.

BLACKPINK has constantly voiced their opinions on climate change. The group is serving as an ambassador at the 26th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for this year hosted by the UK, constantly promoting the importance of responding to climate change. During an interview with BBC back in February when the group was appointed as the COP26 ambassador, BLACKPINK JENNIE has said “I feel like time is running out, and I thought we really need to speak up on this”, further explaining why she decided to take action in looking for measures to address the climate crisis.
