According to YG Entertainment on the 18th, group BLACKPINK got named as their newest Sustainable Development Goals advocates, becoming the first Asian artist ever to be named such a title.

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals addresses a wide array of challenges faced by the international community including global issues such as universal aims, poverty and disease along with environmental, economic, and social issues. It is comprised of 17 broad goals and 169 specific goals, and is commonly used as the global standard for corporate sustainable management (environmental, social, governance)

Upon being appointed as advocates after going through a strict selection process, BLACKPINK received a hand-written letter by UN Secretary General António Guterres, and happily accepted the decision after deeply relating to UN SDGs’ goal to bring about positive changes in this world.

BLACKPINK said “It’s an honor to be able to take part in the path of creating a better future”. They also added “We would like to promote the importance of SDGs with our BLINKs (fandom name) to the whole world and contribute towards finding solutions to the problems we are currently facing”.

Meanwhile advocates of UN SDGs include global leaders such as Prime Ministers, Presidents, and Queens from all around the world, along with renowned artists. BLACKPINK is expected to promote the importance of reaching the goal of UN SDGs along with them, and encourage people to take part in the movement.

Meanwhile BLACKPINK established its status as one of the top girl groups in the world after debuting in August 2016 creating numerous hits. Their YouTube subscribers currently stand at 66.7 million, ranking first among artists from all around the world. Individual members and the official BLACKPINK’s Instagram account has a total of more than 245 million.

With their unprecedented influence, BLCKPINK has been leading the way in various social contribution activities such as being the ambassadors for COP26 (UN Climate Change Conference), taking part in various public interest campaigns, and making donations for the recovery of forest fires.
