[스포츠경향=이유진 기자] BLACKPINK’s sour taste hit the globe.

The song ‘Sour Candy’ by girl group BLACKPINK and Pop star Lady Gaga is setting milestones in global female artist history.

After its surprise release on the 28th at 8 PM(KST), ‘Sour Candy’ is ranked at no. 2 on Spotify’s global chart on the 31st with 6.2 million streams before noon. It is the highest record among all girl group releases in Spotify history. Spotify records have a place on the ‘Billboard Hot 100’ chart as ranking points and therefore has a higher status than iTunes chart results which have often been used to estimate K-Pop’s global popularity.

Furthermore, the record set by ‘Sour Candy’ is higher than that of the title song ‘Rain On Me’ from Lady Gaga’s official album, which also proves BLACKPINK’s global power.

‘Sour Candy’ is also performing well on YouTube. Forbes, the American economics magazine, reported that “The long-awaited collaborative song ‘Sour Candy’ by BLACKPINK and Lady Gaga has set a new streaming record with its monstrous debut last Thursday” on the 29th(local time). The continued, “’Sour Candy’ reached approximately 21.8 million views in 24 hours since its release, setting the highest record in female artist collaboration history”. According to Forbes, the record set by BLACKPINK is higher than the previous record of ‘Don’t Call Me Angel’ by Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey.

Forbes also highly rated their success by explaining, “The record set by ‘Sour Candy’ is only from Audio Video”. In fact, considering the current success, it is almost unfortunate that there are no music videos or related clips on the song ‘Sour Candy’. Music videos are helpful media that can support global promotion and the Billboard Hot 100 chart also takes ‘YouTube MV’ points into account.

BLACKPINK will now challenge the global music market not through collaborative songs, but with their own songs.

Starting with their pre-release title song to be released in June, the group will release two new songs between July~August in special formats, then will release their first full-length album in September. BLACKPINK’s collaboration with Lady Gaga is expected to work as a catalyst to upgrade BLACKPINK’s global presence.
