BLACKPINK Becomes the First K-Pop Group to Reach 1 Billion Views with ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’

[연합뉴스=김효정 기자] The MV for girl group BLACKPINK’s ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ became the first K-Pop group video to surpass 1 billion views on YouTube.
As of November 11, 8 PM, the MV for ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ is at approximately 1 billion and 110 thousand views. The video has surpassed a billion views in about a year and 5 months, since its release last year on June 15.
YG Entertainment uploaded a celebration image to congratulate BLACKPINK’s accomplishment through their official blog and social media account. It is the first time that a K-Pop MV surpassed 1 billion views ever since PSY, and it’s the first video by an idol group to reach 1 billion views.
‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ is the title song of BLACKPINK’s first mini album ‘SQUARE UP’, released last year on June. The song has since helped the group achieve many accomplishments.
The MV surpassed 10 million YouTube views in 6 hours since its release, while setting the fastest K-Pop group records at the point when the video reached 200 million views. The video surpassed 800 million views on May 11 and surpassed 900 million views on July 30.
At the time of the song’s release, ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ and their album ‘SQUARE UP’ entered Billboard’s main charts including the ‘Hot 100’ and ‘Billboard 200’ as no. 55 and no. 40, respectively. They became the first-ever K-Pop girl group to enter two of Billboard’s main charts, which became a hot topic.
Furthermore, since all MVs released by BLACKPINK ever since debut reached over 100 million views, the group is known as the ‘YouTube Queens’.
The videos for ‘BOOMBAYAH’ and ‘AS IF IT’S YOUR LAST’ surpassed 700 million views, while ‘Kill This Love’ released this year on April has also surpassed 645 million views.
The group’s official YouTube channel has over 31.2 million subscribers as well.
BLACKPINK, composed of members JISOO, JENNIE, ROSÉ, and LISA, has a thick bank of fandom not only in Korea, but also overseas with their ‘girl crush’ image and stylish music.
It is reviewed that their thick bank of overseas fandom played a huge role in allowing the group to achieve great results on YouTube.
A K-Pop columnist named Kim Yunha reviewed, “In addition to their music and the team’s popularity, each member is globally popular as ‘celebrities’ and their individual fandom also played a huge role”. She continued, “They also had a good start since YG Entertainment’s overseas fandom are powerful”.
When PSY’s MV for ‘Gangnam Style’ surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube back in December 2012, he was signed to YG Entertainment. Although he has left the agency ever since, accounting for the time when the records were made, official channels by artists of YG have reached 1 billion views in succession.
